Hair stylists are normally able to set their own hours because they rent their station, receive around 40% of what they money they bring into the business, or only come in when they have clients available. The stylist may also own the salon or own the location as well which would allow them to manage all of the income that comes to the salon.

Since the stylist makes their own hours many do not work as much as they would in a corporate job or other business and in turn make less money as well. It is common to see hair stylists that work only two or three days a week. Since many stylists work almost only in cash they are able to hide their money from state and federal taxes. They hide their records in case of an audit and since in many cases they pay less tax illegally than we do they may work less hours for more money.

Hair stylists also receive tips which may make up 20% or more of their cash income which is also normally not accounted for accurately. The stylist rarely tip out others in the salon business and seem to be more stingy with helping reception, assistants, and other people who are helping the stylist when compared to tipping out bus staff or hostesses in the food and dining industry.

Many stylists will work one day during the week and one day during the weekend so that their mix of weekday and weekend clients will be able to make appointments ahead of time. Normally their work days start late around 8, 10, or even after noon. Stylists may also stay in their salons to eat, drink alcohol at their work lounge, and take new hair clients as late as 9:00 PM at night.

The problem that many salons face when bringing in new stylists is that they really do not have enough work for them. They can offer a great commission structure with no base and then if there are no clients the stylist will be out time, transportation money, and they may not have made anything because no clients came to their location for the new stylist.

Reception and other staff at hair salons in Los Angeles are normally treated poorly with low income ranging from $10-$20 per hour. They typically receive few benefits, and the stylists may treat them as a lesser part of the salon because they are not dealing with hair directly. If you do work in reception for a hair salon, demand a livable wage of at least over $20 per hour, work into more of a managerial position at the salon, and do not be easily manipulated by stylists and owners.

Hair stylists can take months and months of vacation time because they normally set their own schedule. In some cases when they take 3-6 months off or more they may loose much of their client base because they would have needed to visit another stylist during this time. A 20-30% decrease in clients after a 6 month vacation might be expected based on a few examples we have seen in the area.

Don’t be fooled in Los Angeles when you go to a hair salon. These are some friendly reminders of ways to reduce stress and money scams when you visit your local Los Angeles hair salon.

1) They charge too much for haircutting

Many salons in Los Angeles overcharge for hair cutting because it is what men receive most of the time and the salon owners know that women will normally pay three times or more for their services in the salon. The way they get around this is by charging men $30 or more for basic haircutting and give it away for free when women purchase the other color, feathers, or blow drying services. If you do get a cut in an area near students or really any other location in LA, you should be able to find a high quality haircut for around $10 or even less in many cases. The owners of the salons will say you will wait longer but the reality is that you will spend less time trying to make an appointment and just get your hair cut the way you want for less money. Do not be manipulated by this scam on mens haircutting.

2) They offer products and services that are unhealthy

Even today many salons in Los Angeles will offer the Brazilian Blowout, Blow Dry, or other chemical straightening treatments even after they have been proven to be unsafe and OSHA has shut down the problem in many salons. There is no “free of chemical” product that is a “chemical” product and in a salon with little ventilation or in an upstairs environment it has been proven to cause negative health effects. Also salons that offer shampoos and conditioners that are artificially chemical based and not from a proven organic source are things to watch out for. PureOlogy is not from plants and is it only pure chemicals that salons are pushing you spend additional money on because it “works better” but in reality it does not and it is best to try out many natural healthy products from sustainable sources first.

3) Pay more for parking

Salons that are located in busy areas tend to force you to park blocks away from the salon in a limited parking structure, valet your car for $8 or more, or pay to park on the street and risk a mistaken parking ticket. Don’t be fooled by these salons and use a service that comes to your location or home to provide the salon quality service. You can also pick a salon that allows for free parking!

4) Tries to only take cash

These salons that try to only take your cash may not reporting their taxes legally and pocketing your money on services. This makes it harder for you because your money, which would normally be divided into various taxes, is not spent on your local government but instead on the hair salon’s personal needs. This hurts everyone around you and only provides incentive for quick money to the salon owner and the stylist which is normally spent on extra unnecessary beauty products, local bars or clubs, as well as unnatural beauty procedures for the owners and stylists. To solve this, pay with your credit card and insist that your stylist receive their tip from the credit card processed.

4) Stylist does not spend time on your needs

Many times a stylist will try to get through as many haircuts as possible. Don’t be fooled, they are not able to do as good of a job unless they are really spending the time necessary to use an appropriate cutting technique and provide a full service. This take an hour or more for a typical mens haircut which you can find in Los Angeles for $10! Do not be ripped off with a mens cut at $30 or more even with a free drink, older women stylists with ancient education, and inattentive reception and staff. Get with a salon or stylist that will fit your needs, will come to your house for a $10 cut even if it is for the whole family, and will service you in a way that makes you feel comfortable.

If you need a new salon, let us know! Call or text (802)445-5626 for a list of great salons in your area or email hairstyle@haircutlosangeles.com directly.

Everyone seems to be asking about the Brazilian Blowout, Keratin treatments, hair straightening, and even BKT in Los Angeles. What is it?

It’s a treatment that lasts from about 90 minutes to 4 hours depending on your hair type. There are many brands with a similar treatment as seen at the Los Angeles Hair Show and some salons have many of them. You hair goes from frizzy to straight and it reduces your blow dry time for 12 week or more.

Just because you see a logo or a link does not mean that it is the real thing. Be sure to visit the salon in person and ask your stylist to show you their cosmetology license (and business license for Los Angeles). Do not be fooled by people who just started working in the hair industry after they received the treatment. Be sure to use a stylist that has years of experience in complete hairstyling solutions including cuts, color, and conditioning treatments so you receive the complete package! We have seen this treatment cost between $100 – $1200 in Los Angeles depending on the type of hair that you have so be sure to get a quote first before you buy.
